MAYA JAYNE COLES
We’re often disappointed that, increasingly, the only seeming requirement for female DJs these days is either having a celebrity parent, step parent, or sibling, or employment as a fashion PR rep with a laptop full of top forty tunes or “classics” they downloaded yesterday; but every once in a while, a really talented and authentic diamond brilliantly stands out in the rough and stands on her own merit, without exploiting the obvious. Enter Maya Jayne Coles — not only a DJ, but a damn good music producer! We love that she’s captured that big 90’s deep house vibe with her hit, “What They Say,” and are excited about all that she’s putting out. So to Maya Jayne Coles, we say something we rarely say to the new crop of DJ femmes out there, “You go, girl!”
CLASSIC JOINT
Not only do we miss good hip hop, but we miss the dope videos, too. *sigh*
PINA. THANK YOU, WIM WENDERS
Wim Wenders does it again — and better than ever — with his breathless and exalting 3-D hommage to late dance maestro and innovator, Pina Bausch. Bausch proved dance to be a powerfully evocative language of its own…and thus, this film should be watched and felt, rather than described by words, which would surely lose the essence in translation. PINA is a MUST-SEE! And, of course, as is always the case with Wenders, the soundtrack is absolutely perfect and brilliant. This is a masterpiece.
